When “Get Ready with Me” Goes Wrong: A Parent’s Guide to TikTok Skincare Trends

If your tween or teen has been asking for expensive skincare products or spending significant time on elaborate beauty routines, you’re not alone. The “Get Ready with Me” (#GRWM) trend on TikTok has become wildly popular with young girls on the platform as influencers promote high-end skincare routines that promise to keep youthful skin in peak, glowing condition.
While being mindful about skin health seems like a good idea, peer pressure – especially when driven by social media algorithms – is rarely so simple. A recent groundbreaking study from Northwestern Medicine has revealed concerning trends in social media-driven skincare that every parent should understand.
The Hidden Dangers Behind TikTok Skincare Trends
Researchers analyzed 100 TikTok videos featuring skincare routines by content creators aged 7 to 18, and the findings were eye-opening. These young influencers were using an average of six different facial products daily, with some applying more than a dozen products. More alarming? The most popular videos contained an average of 11 potentially irritating active ingredients.
But the real concern isn’t vanity – it’s health. These complex routines put young users at risk for developing allergic contact dermatitis, a condition that can permanently limit which soaps, shampoos, and cosmetics they can use for the rest of their lives. Dr. Molly Hales, the study’s lead author and a board-certified dermatologist, explained that the high risk comes from using multiple active ingredients simultaneously and unknowingly applying the same harsh ingredient repeatedly across different products.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Parents should be alert to these red flags:
- Expensive routines: The average regimen costs $168 per month, with some exceeding $500
- Multiple active ingredients: Look for products containing hydroxy acids, retinoids, or salicylic acid being used together
- Missing sunscreen: Only 26% of these routines included sun protection—the most important skincare step for young people
- Early morning routines: Children waking up extra early to complete lengthy skincare regimens before school
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms after starting a new skincare routine, it’s time to visit your doctor (or stop by Urgent Care of Fairhope):
- Persistent redness, itching, or burning sensation
- Rash, swelling, or blisters on the face
- Dry, flaky, or scaly skin that doesn’t improve
- Any visible skin reaction or irritation
These symptoms could indicate allergic contact dermatitis or other skin sensitivities that require professional evaluation.
Simple Solutions that Work
The good news? Young skin is naturally healthy and doesn’t need complex routines. In fact, Dermatologists recommend just a few simple steps for young patients looking to pamper their skin:
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
- Lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (morning only)
What to Avoid:
- Products with multiple active ingredients
- Harsh scrubs or exfoliants
- Anything with strong fragrances
- Layering products without understanding their interactions
Talking To Your Teen
Rather than banning social media, use this as an opportunity to teach critical thinking. Help your child understand that many of these influencers have naturally clear skin and that “more products” doesn’t equal “better health.” Emphasize that true beauty comes from overall wellness, confidence, and taking care of their body, not from expensive products or unrealistic standards.
If your child is experiencing skin irritation or allergic reactions from skincare products, Urgent Care of Fairhope is here to help with prompt, professional care. Check our waitlist online and stop by our walk-in clinic six days per week – no appointment needed.
