Memorial Day Safety: Tips for a Healthy Start to Summer

Memorial Day weekend is that magical time when we dust off the grill, break out the beach chairs, and officially declare summer open for business on the Eastern Shore.
At Urgent Care of Fairhope, we want you enjoying every sunshine-filled minute with family and friends—not sitting in our waiting room (though we do have great magazines). So here’s our local guide to keeping your long weekend celebration safe, fun, and stress-free.
Sun Smart: Protect Your Skin
You’ve been craving that vitamin D, but don’t let sunburn ruin your weekend. The Alabama sun doesn’t mess around, especially after a long winter! Before you break out the bathing suits:
- Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading outdoors (SPF 30+ minimum)
- Reapply every 2 hours or after swimming—even on “cloudy” days.
- Don’t forget easily missed spots: ears, feet, back of neck, and scalp partings.
- Rock those stylish wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses with UV protection.
- Consider UPF clothing for extra protection, especially for the little ones.
- Seek shade during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Remember: That “healthy glow” is actually skin damage. Future you will thank present you for the sunscreen dedication!
Stay Hydrated, Stay Happy
Nothing puts a damper on holiday fun like dehydration. And with our famous Gulf Coast humidity, you’re sweating even when you don’t realize it.
- Start hydrating BEFORE outdoor activities.
- Alternate water with your favorite beverages to stay hydrated (especially if you’re sipping cocktails!)
- Set phone reminders to drink if you tend to forget.
- Keep a water bottle within arm’s reach at all times.
- Watch for signs of dehydration: headache, dizziness, excessive fatigue, or dark urine.
Pro tip: Freeze water bottles halfway before your outing—they’ll melt throughout the day for constantly cold refreshment.
Grill Masters: Fire Up with Care
The smell of barbecue is basically the official scent of Memorial Day. Keep your cookout memories about the food, not the accidents:
- Place grills at least 10 feet from structures, overhanging branches, and high-traffic areas.
- Never leave a hot grill unattended—designate a “grill master” who stays sober.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet away from grilling areas.
- Always have a fire extinguisher or bucket of sand handy for emergencies.
- Use long-handled tools to avoid singed arm hair (not a good look).
- Clean your grill before use to prevent unexpected flare-ups.
- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the cooking area
Food Safety: Keep Cool, Stay Healthy
Memorial Day menus are full of tasty dishes, but warm temperatures increase foodborne illness risks.
- Keep perishable food refrigerated until it’s grill time.
- Don’t leave food out for longer than two hours (or one hour if it’s above 90°F).
- When in doubt, throw it out—your stomach will thank you.
And remember the golden rule of food safety: keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. No one wants the gift of food poisoning from potato salad that’s been sunbathing all afternoon!
Water Safety: Respect the Splash Zone
With our beautiful Mobile Bay and nearby Gulf beaches, water activities are a Memorial Day must. Whether boating, swimming, or just splashing around:
- Never swim alone, even if you’re a strong or experienced swimmer.
- Designate a water watcher when children are swimming. (Put down the phone!)
- Always have life jackets handy, especially on boats.
- Avoid alcohol if you’re planning to swim or pilot a boat—it’s a dangerous combo.
- Know before you go: check water conditions and weather forecasts.
- Learn basic CPR and rescue techniques in case of emergencies.
Travel Smart
If your Memorial Day plans include hitting the road:
- Get your vehicle checked before long trips. (Nobody wants to celebrate on the highway shoulder!)
- Build in extra travel time.
- Take breaks every two hours on long drives to stay alert.
- Have an emergency kit with water, snacks, first aid supplies, and phone chargers.
- Never drive impaired.
When to Visit Us at Urgent Care of Fairhope
Sometimes despite our best efforts, celebrations go sideways. Visit Urgent Care of Fairhope if you experience:
- Sunburns with severe blistering or accompanied by fever/chills.
- Signs of heat exhaustion that don’t improve with rest and hydration.
- Cuts that may need stitches or wounds that show signs of infection.
- Persistent stomach issues after the cookout.
- Minor burns, sprains, or strains that need professional attention.
For life-threatening emergencies, always call 911.
